Unit 2 - The Cost of Corrosion
Corrosion dramatically impacts every industry in the world.
GSCSG is convinced that a significant portion of the staggering cost of corrosion can be reduced through education and the judicious application of current knowledge.
Substantial resources are dedicated to corrosion mitigation annually. In some cases, the only penalty for ignoring corrosion issues is financial. In other cases, it is the loss of life.
The annual cost of corrosion in the United States was reported to exceed $276 Billion. Please refer to Report FHWA-RD-01-156, 2001.
The annual cost of corrosion for the United States Department of Defense (DoD) is over $20 Billion. Please refer to Report FHWA-RD-01-156, 2001.
Approximately 25% of the U.S. Navy’s maintenance budget is allocated to corrosion. Please refer to Report GAO-03-753, 2003.
